Official Logos
Dartmouth Engineering Logos
Use these logos for all external and official communications needs. Preference should be given to the horizontal version with the shield emblem. Limit the use of wordmark logos—versions without the shield—to situations where the design does not accommodate the shield and when the shield will be too small to discern details or print legibly.

Thayer Shield
The shield emblem is reserved for situations where space for branding is limited or where context allows for a more informal presentation.
Thayer Icon
The shield icon is reserved for digital branding when display options are limited to a small circle, square or other shape. An example of appropriate use is customizing software iconography, avatars, and other digital brand identity needs.

Email Signature Standards
Use the following standards for your email signature.
Do not use images, icons, quotes, or other embellishing elements in your email signature block.

Standard Signature Recommended
This format is the most compatible option and ensures your email will be viewable, usable, and look professional in all email software.
An email signature that starts with two dashes followed by two spaces [-- ] at the top of your signature block signals to recipients email software that this is the start of an email signature and not part of the body of the email.
Adhering to the shown international phone number format ensures the "click-to-dial" feature on mobile phones works properly regardless of your recipients' location.
If you are using modern email software, including your email address in your email signature is redundant.
These email signature best practices help email client software intelligently interpret your contact information and improve email search, while making your email more accessible for people using assistive technology to consume the content of your email.

Signature w/ Logo Not Recommended
Why is adding a logo, and images, not recommended?
- Images in an email increase the likelihood that your email will be flagged as SPAM or junk.
- Configuring images properly in a signature is difficult and often impossible on mobile devices.
- An image in your email signature can make it look like every email you send has a file attachment.
- Many popular email clients do not display images, for privacy and security, until after you click on them.
- It is becoming increasingly popular for people to use high contrast "dark mode" and assistive technology to display and read email. As a result, it is impossible to optimize a logo that looks professional across devices and software.
If you still insist on including the logo, do not copy and paste from the example shown above...
Download the email logo image file or link directly to the hosted file and configure your email signature using the instructions provided below, paying close attention to the steps for properly adding images inline with your signature text.

Subject: Email Style & Formatting Guidelines
–––––––––––
Dear Thayer Community,
Please use plain text or Arial font when composing emails.
- Do not use the Dartmouth Ruzicka or National 2 fonts because they may not be available to people receiving your email.
- Do not use colored text, text highlights, background colors, background images, or HTML elements in your emails (see "Email Signature w/ Logo").
If you need to send bulk, marketing, newsletter, or HTML email, please contact Thayer's Communications Office (EB47) so we may assist you.
Five Email Tips
- Make subject lines meaningful.
- Keep messages clear and brief.
- Put key information at the top.
- Don’t mass “CC” or “BCC.”
- If there's any chance someone may feel upset or offended by your email, don’t send it. Talk to them instead!
Thank you,
Thayer Communications Team
